Evolution of Starbucks logo from 1971-2011. I like how clean it looks without the type.

When a company can drop the type and have a mark still have instant brand recognition, it's a good thing. I like how clean it looks.

This Futurity article indicates some of the reasons as being for localization purposes in Asia, which makes a ton of sense, however, if it's a new brand being introduced into the market, I’m not sure not having a name written out somehow is the best idea. The most surprising thing from this article though, is that Starbucks is 40 years old!

Collection of san serif "I" battles from #typewar. Man, I hate these.

(download)

Been playing TypeWar occassionally and while I currently have an accuracy rating of around 95% these are the ones that almost always trip me up.

I usually get the Futura and Gill Sans ones right but the rest are just plain evil.

Will keep adding more to this set as I get them. It's also interesting to see the frequency of when I get them based on the score changes. On a positive note, the last on of these I got was at a score of 3750 and I'm now at 4563 so I haven't had to deal with it for awhile. Of course, this means the next time I fire it up I'll get one...

Timeless Typography. A comparison of Coke vs Pepsi logos over the years.

Media_httpwwwdesignerdailycomwpcontentuploads200907pepsivscokejpg_ghfhzjcpjjibflw

I thought this was an interesting comparison though it doesn’t exactly tell the whole story. I believe there were some Coke redesigns in the middle, but they’ve always been subtle or for specific product lines (like Diet Coke). However, the point is, the original corporate mark has remained largely unchanged for 124 years. Now, that’s timeless typography.

I found my iPhone! And I can do curly quotes!

Photo

Ok, I never really lost it. Was just trying out the new “Find My Phone” feature on iPhone 3.0 and MobileMe. This is awesome. Great job Apple!

And for the type geeks out there, did you notice the curly quotes in this post? Love that I can do that now from the iPhone.

Thinking of not renewing Antypography domain after it expires in Oct.

I haven't posted to it since February and it's not looking like I'm ever going to find time in the foreseeable future. Should I just let it expire or keep it around for another year?
