Hello World!

Replaced my aging aftermarket CF Kidneys with BMW Performance M3 Edition ones. Can't beat OEM quality.

After a long search for somebody, anybody who makes a halfway-decent quality Carbon Fiber kidney, I decided I would go with the OEM ones from BMW Performance. They’re not CF, but these M3 Edition kidneys are the same ones used on the GTS, so needlesstosay, the quality is far and away superior to any aftermarket parts out there. I made the decision after the nice folks at IND Distribution (thanks, Nate!) were kind enough to be upfront about the fact that even the CF versions they sold weren’t any better quality than any of the other ones that come from the same manufacturer in Asia. Honesty and customer service always win me over, so they got my business (and will continue to do so).

Below are some comparisons between the quality (if you can even call it a comparison). Granted, the aftermarket ones are 2 years old, but you can still see the craftsmanship difference. For comparison sake, here’s a shot of the aftermarket ones when they were new.

One nice little perk from IND, these shipped wrapped in a couple of micro fiber cloths. Been needing to get some more of those, but now I don’t have to. Thank you, IND for the great service.

A few pics from ///MFest Trendsetters @oakley

Didn’t stay as long this year so I don’t have as many pics. I was happy to see a 1M in person. Car looked awesome. Loved Custom Dunny’s painted to match one of the cars. And the white widebody E46 was insane.

Nooooo! Anyone know a good wheel repair guy?

Photo

Stupid tight parking spots next to curbs with little room to turn! I'm usually really careful (for this exact reason) but this one got me during a lapse in attention. Grrrrrr…just in time for the next MFest gathering this Saturday too :(

Before & After comparisons using the Ansel Adams filter in Camera+ for the first time.

Who would have thought a 3Gs iPhone could take pics like this? I certainly didn’t. For comparison, check out the originals. 3 basic filters on Camera+ did the trick on these black and whites:

  • Clarity
  • Ansel Adams
  • Rounded White Border
  • (plus crop and rotate for the square shots)

The Exhaust shot below is cool, but you can see how the filters went too far on the other two shots with the BMW Roundels. I thought the steering wheel was going to turn out better since it's a halfway decent original.

For this color shot, I used:

  • Clarity
  • Magic Hour
  • Rounded White Border

I had been using Camera+ and their Clarity filter with mixed results for a while, but I’m pretty happy with how these turned out. My one complaint is they should provide a “strength” slider for Clarity, just like they do with some of their other effects so you can control how far it goes.

Lest anyone think the GoPro suction mount will work hanging down, it won’t.

Photo

It felt pretty secure when I stuck it on the nice flat surface behind my rearview mirror, but after driving for a few minutes, gravity and wiggling took it's toll. This was the result. A nice little chunk taken out of my center console when it decided to fall. Grrrrrr.

A few B&W shots of my quick Blackstar/Silverado Canyon roadtrip today.

(download)
Finally got a chance to drive out to Blackstar Canyon Road to take some pics. I actually ran into @gstiehl cycling over there while shooting but I didn’t have the foresight to snap a pic of him.

The drive on Silverado Canyon was nice and scenic, but definitely not fast. I also finally used the GoPro I got for Christmas, but the videos are all quite boring.

What is this and how the hell did it get stuck inside my rear windshield?

P257

The next obvious question is, how do I get it out? Looks like I'm gonna be removing some car panels this weekend >_<

Better late than never. My BMW M3 Anniversary gift finally arrived.

Img_7098

I have read a lot about other BMW owners getting anniversary gifts while others didn’t. And since my 1 year came and went without anything coming in the mail, I thought I was going to be one of the latter. Well, when I saw a cardboard-backed envelope from Sterling, I had a feeling I knew what it was...and sure enough, I now have my concept drawing. It’s an E90 instead of an E92, but whatever.

Come to think of it, my car actually arrived in Port Heueneme on September 27th, and I picked it up from my dealership on October 9th, so I guess if you look at it that way, it’s about a year. I was considering my original pickup date of August 4th in Germany as the first date of ownership.

It’s a simple thing they do, but definitely helps build loyalty.

Pics and Videos from #oakleycanyonrun with @chriscasper and @dicksonfong

There were supposed to be more people and cars doing this, but it turned out that only 3 of us could go. Me in my M3, Dickson had his GLI and Casper drove his Shelby Mustang. Had to take the requisite pics of the cars in front of HQ since that’s where we started. Too bad we didn’t have a bigger crew, but it was a little easier to organize I suppose.

Here’s a map of the whole trip. We didn’t actually make it down to Lake Henshaw since we decided to do a couple runs up and down Palomar Mountain Road instead. (Google Map Link).

First leg, Live Oak Canyon Road. It’s just in our backyard, so we had to do it.

Second leg, Ortega Highway towards Lake Elsinore. You can hear music during the first few seconds of the clip, but I turned it off so the engine could be heard better. I stopped recording after we got stuck behind some slow cars.

We ended up pulling off the road shortly after turning off the 76 to Palomar Mountain Road since there was a large RV driving pretty slow in front of us. We wanted to get a good drive up the mountain so we decided to wait it out. First few pics below are from where we waited.

Of course, after we took off again, we got stuck behind more slow cars. Guess that’s inevitable. I turned off my video after we got stuck again, but couldn't turn it back on when the slower cars pulled over and let us pass. The first run up was great...if only I had some video of it.

The next stop was Mother’s Kitchen at the top of the run. We stopped for some food and just hung out for a bit.

Casper knew of a lookout point where he had visited before so we drove there after brunch and took a few pics of the cars. Not the best backdrop, but at least there was a lot of open area.

Like an idiot, I forgot to turn on the mic during a couple portions of the drive...and they both happened to be when I was following Casper. Here’s two videos of his Shelby Mustang GT500...driving in silence :(

And here's the final run down the mountain. This time I followed Dickson in his GLI. That thing is pretty fast. It felt like he was going faster than the other runs we did, but I realized after the fact that I forgot to hi the M button on this run. Because of how many twists and turns there are, I didn't get much opportunity to get past 2nd gear, and the regular mode (without M) has harder engine braking so it definitely slowed me down a little.

There was a photographer who had set up on one of the hairpins, taking pics of all the cars and motorcyclists going by. We saw him in the first 3 passes and decided to stop on the final run down the mountain so we could get his contact info. Caper saw him tracking with my M3 on the first run, and I saw him shooting Casper on the second run so he must have had some pics. Unfortunately, he had already packed up and left on our last run down. Dickson saw his name on some sign so I was able to look up the website and found the gallery. Thanks, Rick Clemson, for shooting that day! I'll be putting my order in soon. Hopefully he shot in RAW. We have pics on page 3 and page 6.

Here’s a funny picture from his gallery. We saw these two Mitsubishi's at Mother’s Kitchen, but apparently they were clocked along the way. Just glad it was them and not us.

All in all, a fun day of driving. Must do it again.

Installed ZCP Spoiler last night. Some quick iPhone pics now, better ones maybe this weekend.

(download)

The old spoiler took much longer to get off than I expected, but was able to get it all done last night before it got too dark.

It's really odd how different it looks from various angles. I think my favorite view is straight on from the back, followed by a 3/4 view. The direct side view looks weird to me since it seems to be too angled, but for the most part I'm happy with how the spoiler goes with the lines of the car.
